A Necessary Response

to shiao's justification. It was so well-written it can almost become a testimony for the school. No wonder they got you in there!

I guess you really got it spot on there.

Product differentiation. SMU is successful in its marketing campaigns because of this. It emphasizes on being different from the rest of its fellow institutions. Instead of focusing on traditional results like providing a complete education or personal development, they turn towards producing marketable and very employable students. I mean who joins SMU for its CCAs? This brings me to another point. Consumer Sovereignty. SMU provides employers - which in this case are consumers - with people that they desire. People who are well drilled in the workings of society, interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills, networking and versatility. It offers society what they want. To simplify shiao's inevitable cycle of repetition, students join because they want to become desirable, and employers continue to employ them, further reinforce the desirability.

However, I beg to differ that the asian culture will remain intact. Culture is not a measure of the percentage of foreign students. It's something invisible, not measurable but rather felt. Just as with the influx of western culture, it does not necessary means more foreigners or westerners, but just means people's attitude and lives are changing. The Culture is changing. U just can't see it or count it.

I do not blame the decline in social morals on SMU though - it's illogical. But I believe people DO get more evil if they are moulded in such a way, especially during the sprouting years when we come of age. If people are trained to kill in school, naturally they WILL kill when they leave school.

I agree with shiao's self-fufilling prophecy. Nevertheless, I have to state my stance that I believe it will ultimately show through. No matter what kind of good students that SMU takes in and in turn "produce", people outside will soon realize a stark contrast from that of the conventional schools. Through prolonged exposure and observations, they will discover the gap - that humility is clearly missing, that arrogance and individualism are what they swore by, that pride and hypocrisy replaced a certain uprightness and sincerity in them.
