12,000??
As I was conversing with a certain shiao just now, I got reminded of yesterday's news of reports showing SMU grads are drawing the most basic starting pay. I can't help but comment about it, due to my overwhelming dislike for that institution. Hear me out. This is MY theory.
Due to the hype about SMU over the past few years, even before the first batch of grads came out, people were going gaga over their teaching methods, their culture and less importantly its location. It's usual to hear comments that they produce innovative students, but what real studies have been carried out to compare their so-called improved teaching methods, as compared to the conventional ones? Even if so, how accurate as such studies, if the grads haven't been studied over a prolonged period of time, haven't really proved themselves in the market. Despite that, just the name of their institution just makes employers' eyes light up.
Just to prove how much the name SMU has internalised itself into the nation's renowed leading business/accounting/management training centre, I just have to mention that I may be taking Economics to relatives/colleagues/friends/strangers, their reaction would almost be unanimous - why dowan to SMU? I hate really to explain time and again my reasons. To prevent you guys from asking me, here's why:
(1) SMU boasts of a Westernised culture. Something I rather resent. We are, by default, an Asian society. Especially Chinese, who have been brought up by the values of family, team, cooperation rather than stand strong and alone. I believe many people who go in struggle to come to terms with this fact, that they find it extremely hard to "fit in".
(2) SMU is a highly competitive school. People will do anything to be in front. This even at the expense of betraying your friends or close ones, I shall not go into any details. I guess the school trains people to be this way, for they must think of preparing students for the society. But in fact, it's people who bring over this culture to society. Such that now morals is a rather scarce resource.
(3) SMU is located in town. Sorry SMU wannabe(s) or gonnabe(s). I regard the temptation of being located in the center of the entertainment district too high for schooling. As much as the location is a very good advantage, with the aid of NEL and the upcoming Circle Line, I would still rather locate myself far from the city centre. It's just too little of a school.
People can claim I am a biased source of argument. Whatever. I say give the society 5 - 10 years to see the results. Let these so-called eiltes compete with the conventional grads. It is a marathon, not a race. Disclaimer: The above post is merely a depiction of the writer's views and solely up to the reader's interpretation.
